I always use synthetic - inert, non-rotting.
I prefer light brown although dark green looks better. I get the impression
that I get more eggs on brown but perhaps they are harder to see for egg
predators. Nylon is easy to boil, chlorinate or dry for sterility also. Any
colour will make them happy but probably plants would make them happier :-)
