Greetings,
Unlike most of you, I study a very peculiar sub-species known as tourists. I
work as the executive director of The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL), a
non-profit conservation organization based in Berkeley California (Yes, I
know there are no coral reefs in Berkeley!) CORAL's mission is to get scuba
divers, snorkelers and others involved in coral reef conservation. We may be
of some service to some of the list's readers because we act as match-makers
for scientific or conservation projects that need volunteer assistance. In
addition CORAL raises money to support marine protected areas, create
educational programs concerning coral reefs and the threats they face world
wide, etc.

My own entry into the world of coral was as a scuba diver (14 years ago) and
CORAL (the organization) was created in order to take advantage of divers as
a hugh, virtually untapped potenetial source of support for coral reef
conservation. We currently are working with scientists such as John McManus
at ICLARM in the Philippines to supplement the ReefBase project and Bob
Ginsburg and the International Year of the Reef (IYOR-1997).

On the personal side, I am married, a recovering attorney, and an e-mail
addict. My academic background is non-scientific ( International Affairs,
Law and Tourism Management) but I am very interested in building as many
bridges as we can between the conservation world and the science world.

I will be out of town for the next week ( at the DEMA dive show in New
Orleans) but look forward to hearing from any of you after 1/23/95.

All the Best,
Stephen Colwell
