"chum" - now that's a nice English word. In English refers to a familiar
friend, in strine is short for "new chum" and usually was a kind of
derogatory referral to a recently arrived pommie who disn't know anything
and was in general rather useless. If my understanding of Roy's reference
is correct then American's chop up their friends and new immigrants,
semi-digest them and throw them over the side of a boat and expect to
catch edible fish as a result of this bizarre ritual ;-))

What a tragic use of a previously useful word. Haven't they heard of the
word berley;-)
