As much as I'd love to argue with Harro :-) I think he really is correct on
this count. The TB has been around for years and will continue to be there.
It mainly affects fish that are sensitive to it which often is the rainbowfish.
People with harder water (could be GH but most likely a pH stabilizing KH)
tend not to have as many problems with TB, even the fish slobs. People with
softer water have to keep after their water changes lest they end up with TB.
Higher temperatures also stress bows into succumbing to the bacterium. (above
about 78 F). Putting bows that are susceptible to TB into a hot tank that has
CO2 pumped in that could lower the pH (even worse if it changes greatly) might
end up triggering an outbreak. Did you have CO2 on that tank, was the water
above 80F? Changing the conditions of your tank might be a better way of
avoiding an outbreak in the future.
