I've noticed "scarey" behaviour with a group of G. bleheri I have in a
20L right now. I have this set up for spawning, so it's only a mop and
a corner filter (lighting is overhead, on for about 14 hours). The fish
are almost always hiding behind the filter when I observe them. I've
felt it might be glare from the glass bottom as well as the lack of
plants and cover. It also appears to be clearly linked to my being
around, because they are consistently filling the mop with eggs sometime
during the day. While they tend to hide anytime I am around, they are
worst later in the day. If I catch them right earlier in the day, I can
occasionally see the colored males zipping around. When they see me,
though, that's it and they are gone behind the filter. I expect to put
them into a larger, rainbow community tank soon, and expect that they
will calm down and be more visible.
