Now we are getting somewhere. I thought maybe a message or two had bounced at
my CC mail and I missed how someone managed to land on Yapan Island and collect
that creature. When I talked to Dave Price several years ago he was extremely
paranoid/nervous about anyone coming in and collect "that new Chilatherina" or
the M. japanensis. He was afraid that the Indonesians would use something like
that as an excuse to remove his group from the island. I know things can
change but unless someone can track down this as a reliable source I think I
would have to agree with Adrian, it's probably the C. fasciata from Mamberamo
R. BTW that picture on pg 85 of Rainbowfishes (Allen) is a lot better when
viewed as a slide. Those black bars in the belly are so vivid that they
actually seem to move. I hope they'll be able to keep that crisp look to that
variety.

Andy, I think you have the wrong fish in "C.pricei"

C.pricei comes from Yapen Island - According to my source, the Chilatherina
species ex Canberra comes from the Mamberamo R. and is just another
C.fasciata????
