Another option is a "Nitrate Resin", which will replace Nitrates with
Chlorides in your tank water. I have tried this on a number of occasions and
it does work well. The resin can be regenerated with salt water. My method
was to place the resin in a porous bag (ladies stockings?) which was then
placed inside an internal power filter, run for 2-3 days, then removed and
given quick clean under the tap to remove mulm, and then placed into a
bucket of salt water for a day to regenerate. Don't forget that the filter
must be flushed with freshwater before going back into the tank.

Just another method, but I find lots of plants and weekly water changes the
best and most pleasing option.
