Hello Julie and welcome to the list

Since you seem interested in " having a go" at breeding you have obviously
decided to get another tank or two. That's what happened to most of us,
then it becomes a disease that takes over the house and you have to have a
separate 'fishroom' so you don't recome a "displaced person" ;-)

My first suggestion is to use your first extra tank as a quarantine setup
for new purchases for at least a fortnight after bringing them home. It
would be a dreadful shame to introduce something "nasty" to your collection
in the community tank.In between purchases it can be used for breeding

Spawning mops can easily be made by winding nylon wool around a book or
your hand, cutting one side, tying and attaching to a piece of styrofoam
and sterilising. These can be used over and over. Please consider joining a
club such as ANGFA or RSG as they can offer lots of contacts and info and
are a source of reliably identified fish of known parentage unlike many
commercial suppliers. If you are uncertain of the purity of your stock
please don't breed from them as thre are too many crosses around already.

A simple way to harden your water would be to add some shellgrit to your
substrate.

Regards,
Bruce.
