When ever my fish have had gill flukes (which were identified by a vet)
the fish swam at a slight angle with their head often at the surface of the
water and their breathing was quite fast. They may also scratch, but I
never really noticed them doing so. Also, gill flukes are usually species
(or genus, or etc etc) specific, hence what will infect a rainbow won't
bother a cichlid.
