Howdy All (and Roy): the only thing that would dissuade me from
recommending M. boesemani to a beginner is that once bred the fry take a
long time to grow - and this may tend to dishearten beginners. If it takes
six months to raise the fry to saleable/swappable size then they may well go
elsewhere. There is this general tendancy for NG Melanotaeniids to grow
slowly compared to Australian species.

A better choice may be M. herbertaxelrodi, which in my experience are one of
the fastest-growing NG fish, or the afore-mentioned M. praecox. Are there
many M. trifasciata locality/types available in the hobby in the USA?

For a hobbyist in Australia then I'd recommend one of the M. eachamensis
"tribe" - the Euramoos were said to be especially prolific.
