I have raised most of my fish in bare tanks with just the filter and water. I
always try to put something dark over the outside of the bottom, back and
sides of the tank (I usually painted them, or taped garbage bags to the tank).
I've always found the bare approach was easier when doing water changes and
keep track of dead fish etc etc.
