That "grand old man" of ANGFA, Ron Bowman used to describe this problem of
fry deformities from lack of Calcium in "soft" water situations both in
nature and in aquaria with a nice little analogy that makes you feel good
but probably as a few holes in it ;-)

He likens an aquarium to enclosing part of a stream inside a transparent,
impervious box. As far as the calcium is concerned, in nature , even in
very soft water situations there is a constant flow into each location of
Calcium ions from further upstream so evn if the fry take up those few
available ions into their skeletons there are more becoming available all
the time. If we put our "box" around our fry they can quite quickly use up
the calcium and there is no more arriving to replace it.

As an overall concept i sounds nice but -------
