I know that when we want to do any experiments with vertebrates at Uni,
whether we are killing them or not the animal ethics board has to be
notified and they decide whether the work can go ahead. Most of the fish
related experiments have involved stressing the animal and then taking blood
samples. The fish are usually killed as its hard to draw much blood out of
a 10cm silver bream. Fo this work a whole heap pf forms must be filled out
explaning the work and why the animal has to be used. On the otherhand if
the experiment uses invertebrates, as opposed to vertebrates there is no
problem. Student regularly have to disect live marron and yabbies in
classes. Now the nervous systems are different but surely chopping off the
"head" of a freshwater crayfish and disecting it is cruel, but we are
permitted to do that.
