Carbon

I really cant see any advantage that outweighs the disadvantages of using
carbon as a filtering medium. Carbon is an indiscriminant filter which not
only takes out things you dont want but also those things that you might
want. This is espescially true if you are trying to grow plants. The other
major downfall is that carbon filter by the means of a diffusion gradient.
This in turn means that it is quite possible that carbon can actually leach
harmful chemicals back into the aquarium. I personally think that there are
much more superior filtering methods, eg mechanical (dacron works a treat)
and biological. At the end of the day it is your choice.
