Here's my into to the list.
My name is Dean Staff.
I am currently the Membership Co-ordinator for the Aquatic Conservation Network. I also maintain the ACN's archive site at the National Capital Freenet in Ottawa,
Canada, and I have recently taken on the task of putting together the WEB version of the ACN Bulletin "Aquatic Survival".
An intrest in aquatic life has run in my family for years. My Grandfather had a pond in his back yard, which was not uncommon in England.
I became interested in fish at the age of 4, when while swinging a set of keys on a string, I sent them flying throught the front of my father's aquarium. This was also my first introduction into Fish Preservation.
After moving to Canada, my father continued to keep aqauria and until 6 months ago had a pond in his living room. But I personally didn't start my first aquarium until 6 years ago when my wife bought me a used tank after we got married. (she has regrette
d it ever since)
I have kept both freshwater and Marine fishes, nothing fancy, just goldfish and damsel. But the field facinated me. I started to keep 3 tanks, and building my own filter system & lighthood.
I joined ACN in Nov. 1992 after being given a copy of Aquatic Survival and decided I liked what ACN was attemping to do.
My Aquatic education is limited to hobbist liturature. But I feel that hobbists have a great deal to contribute to the Conservation effort. And if nothing else, if we can educated the hobbists about aquatic conservation I think it will go a long way to he
lping the preservation of aquatic habitats and wildlife.
I am looking forward to following the discussions that will follow on ACN-L. I think this list will become an important resource for the conservation of aquatic life.
